Your adventure begins at Gare Chamonix Train du Montenvers with a charming 20-minute train ride up the mountainside, offering a unique perspective of the Mer de Glace glacier (the largest glacier in France ). Stepping off the train into the crisp mountain air, you will find that it is a great hiking for the whole family. Before starting your descent, families can discover the famous Grotte de Glace, reaching the ice cave easily via the gondola lift. To hike downhill from the station, follow the stone path south along VC N°1 for approximately 300 meters before turning 180° left toward Chamonix, following the clear signpost on the right (Les Bois, Les Rochers des Mottets).
The path eventually opens up into a dramatic cliffside trail revealing breathtaking panoramas of towering peaks and the sprawling glacier. You can pause for a rest at the Buvette des Mottets to enjoy food, drinks, and stunning nature views before continuing toward Chamonix. The final part of the trail is very easy as you descend into the valley, eventually reaching the parking area at Les Planards.
